Dr. Se Mo Suh passed away peacefully on
Sunday, December 29, 2019

Se Mo Suh passed away at the age of 89 in San Jose, California. He was surrounded by his entire family - Young Shim, his beloved wife of 54 years, sons Philip and Timothy, daughters-in-law Michele and Mary, grandchildren: Caitlin, Jonathan, Matthew, Sarah and Rachel, and best friend of over 70 years, Dr. John Joon-Sik Hong. The entire family had a wonderful last Christmas together in San Jose.

In addition to being a prominent and well-respected physician in South Korea, Dr. Suh was well known in the Korean American community in Hawaii and on the mainland. He was an active community leader who dedicated his life to helping others.

Dr. Suh’s Christian faith was also an important part of his life. He was a founding member of the Alpha Korean United Church in Toronto, Canada and an elder of the Korean Christian Church in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dr. Suh taught generations of physicians as a professor at the Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea and the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. Dr. Suh was the first Korean physician certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in the United States and the first Korean language speaking primary care physician in Hawaii.

Staying true to his passion for learning and teaching, Dr. Suh donated his body to the John A. Burns School of Medicine - University of Hawaii, to train future doctors.
